Hotter Than It Should Be

Summary of Talk on Climate Change given by Carine Seror - Director, Corporate Responsibility, WWF Singapore at NatGeo Store, VivoCity on 20/02/2010

Singapore has had a 0.4 degree centigrade increase in surface temperature over the last 40 years.

The global tolerance for temperature rise is 2 degrees centigrade, before the ecological balance is upset significantly and prominent species start being affected.

A rise in water level of 59cm can significantly affect Singapore.

Adverse affect of rising sea levels: Saline water leeching into arable land and rendering it unusable for agriculture.

2 kWh of electricity used domestically = 1 kg Carbon Dioxide dumped into the atmosphere.

Individual air travel from Singapore to Phuket = 0.6 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide

Individual air travel from Singapore to Europe = 8.9 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide

Amount of water required to make a regular Starbucks Latte (Including plastic cup, wrapper, lid etc.) = 208 litres per cup

Among various packaging available for groceries (Milk, Juice etc.), Tetrapak has the least environmental impact, compared to glass and plastic packaging.

Alpha Biofuels have an initiative in Singapore to provide Bio Diesel made from used cooking oil.
